Unconscious Bias and Conscious Inclusion Training

Beth Thomas Hancock and John Lynch

What is unconscious bias? Why does unconscious bias happen? What are the impacts of unconscious bias?

How can we train ourselves to limit unconscious biases and promote conscious inclusion?

The first part of the training will explore unconscious biases around race and ethnicity in today's society. How do these unconscious biases play out and what are the impacts for children, young people and adults? Hear a first-hand account of how unconscious biases and microaggressions negatively affect people and institutions.

The second part of the training will seek to understand how unconscious bias occurs, provide examples of the impact of unconscious biases according to gender and ethnicity and then look at how the occurrence of unconscious bias can be lessened. We will look at the concept of white privilege to understand how this contributes to inequality. There will be a focus on conscious inclusion and a look at how this practice can be incorporated in our own roles and institutions.
